J-1 Teacher Exchange Program

The J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is a cultural exchange initiative that allows qualified international educators to teach full-time at accredited primary and secondary schools (K–12) in the United States. The program promotes cross-cultural understanding by enabling foreign teachers to share their educational practices while experiencing the American education system firsthand.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the J-1 Teacher Program, applicants must:

  • Be currently employed as a teacher in their home country or country of legal residence.

  • Meet the qualifications for teaching at the primary or secondary level in their home country.

  • Have at least two years of full-time teaching experience.

  • Possess the fluency in English necessary to function in an American classroom.

  • Intend to enter the U.S. temporarily for the purpose of teaching and cultural exchange.

 

Academic Criteria

Applicants must hold:

  • At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or in the academic subject they intend to teach.

  • Any licenses or certifications required to teach in their home country.

 

Teaching Experience

  • A minimum of two years of full-time, post-degree teaching experience is required.

  • Experience must be relevant to the level and subject the teacher will instruct in the U.S.

  • Preference is often given to educators with demonstrated classroom success and cross-cultural skills.

 

Program Duration

  • The J-1 Teacher Program is typically valid for up to three years, with the possibility of a one- or two-year extension (maximum of five years).

  • After completing the program, teachers are expected to return to their home country for at least two years, as required under the home residency requirement (Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act).

 

This program not only enhances U.S. classrooms with global perspectives but also allows international educators to grow professionally and personally through cultural immersion.
